New Dance Minor Launched Within the Department of Visual and Performing Arts
The Department of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) at Le Moyne College has added a new 15-credit dance minor. It’s the latest minor at Le Moyne, joining existing minor programs in music, visual arts, arts administration, and major and minor programs in theatre.
“We regularly offer dance classes as free electives, and coupled with our active extra-curricular student dance ensembles, creating this minor program seemed like a win-win for the College, VPA and the many Le Moyne students who are already participating,” said Theatre Program Director Matt Chiorini. “VPA strives to educate the ‘whole artist’ in the spirit of the Jesuit tradition of cura personalis, and this new minor is a great way to add some much need physical activity to the intellectual and spiritual rigors of a Le Moyne education.”
“The creation of a dance minor at Le Moyne is very exciting news!” said Jennifer Sikora, leader of the Le Moyne Student Dance Company. “Giving student dancers the opportunity to receive academic credit for something they love to do is great. This is an opportunity that every dancer should take advantage of.”
Students interested in minoring in dance will find a variety of classes from which to choose. In the first week since approval of the minor, nine students have already indicated an interest in minoring in dance. The dance minor has the support of the Faculty Senate, the Curriculum Committee, Provost Linda LeMura and Arts and Sciences Dean Christopher Jones.
Larry Crabtree, longtime adjunct professor of dance at Le Moyne, said. “With the new dance minor being offered at Le Moyne College, students with previous training, as well as those without previous training, can strengthen their abilities and opportunities for their future. This new minor is another way for Le Moyne to enhance their student’s goals, careers and lives.”
