2013 Founders' Day Gala to Honor Jim and DeDe Walsh

Le Moyne College will hold its annual Founders’ Day Gala on Friday, Nov. 22. The event, which benefits Le Moyne’s scholarship programs, begins at 6:30 p.m. in the College’s recreation center.

In recognition of their lives of dedicated service to the Central New York community, as well as their ability to make a difference on national and international stages, the College will present Jim and DeDe Walsh with the 2013 Simon Le Moyne Award, the highest honor given by Le Moyne College.

An able, dedicated public official, Jim Walsh served the residents of New York’s 25th Congressional District for 20 years in the U.S. House of Representatives. He was a longtime member of the House Appropriations Committee, securing approximately $1 billion to support economic development and other initiatives across the region. Jim also distinguished himself as a staunch advocate for the environment, supporting projects such as the cleanup of Onondaga Lake and the protection of watersheds in the Catskill Mountains. As a member of Congressional Friends of Ireland, he worked tirelessly to promote peace in Northern Ireland, a cause to which he is deeply connected. In addition to those outstanding professional accomplishments, Jim has been active in numerous civic and charitable organizations, including the Erie Canal Museum, Vera House and the Everson Museum of Art.

DeDe Walsh has long been passionate about education, and has devoted her professional life to teaching and mentoring children and young adults. She has worked with the Liberty Partnership Program and Fowler High School in Syracuse, taught at the elementary-school level, and served on the boards of educational and advocacy organizations such as the Onondaga Community College Foundation and the Learning Disabilities Association of Central New York. She has also lent her time and talent to the Central New York Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the Consortium for Children’s Services, and the Junior League. The Jim and DeDe Walsh Birthing Center at the Community Campus of Upstate University Hospital is near and dear to DeDe’s heart and serves as an example of her concern for children and families within the Central New York community.
