When Shakespeare was ready to hang up his pen, he did it with style. Shakespeare’s final play is an enchanting fairy tale, weaving together magic, romance, comedy, and poetry in this compelling fable of revenge and forgiveness. Starring local theatre legend Mike Barbour as the wizard Prospero, The Tempest is a bewitching masterwork that continues to cast a spell hundreds of years after it was first performed.
This Le Moyne College production of The Tempest will be under the direction of Assistant Professor of Theatre Matt Chiorini. Scenery will be designed by Karel Blakeley and costumes designed by Kara Midlam.
The rest of the theatre season at Le Moyne continues with the dark comedy “Reckless,” by Craig Lucas to be directed by Le Moyne alumna and professional actress/director Leslie Noble, playing in the intimate Marren Studio Theatre from February 15-23, 2013. Closing the season will be the classic Gilbert and Sullivan musical: “The Pirates of Penzance,” under the direction of Assistant Professor Matt Chiorini and the musical direction of Assistant Director of Music Jocelyn Rauch. “Pirates of Penzance” will be performed April 4-13 and both shows will be performed in the W. Carroll Coyne Performing Arts Center by Le Moyne students and faculty.
“Le Moyne Theatre is engaged in the education of the whole artist,” says Department of Visual and Performing Arts Chair Karel Blakeley. “We’re immensely proud of our talented and versatile students and seek with every show to challenge and inspire them while creating extraordinary theatrical events for our audience and campus community.
Ticket prices are $15 for adults, $10 for senior citizens and $5 for students and the Le Moyne community. For additional information and ticket reservations, please call the W. Carroll Coyne Center for the Performing Arts at (315) 445-4200 or visit www.lemoyne.edu/vpa for information about any of these shows or about the theatre program at Le Moyne College.
Additionally, Le Moyne College will continue its support and management of the Gifford Family Theatre. Last year’s “How I Became a Pirate” was hugely successful and packed the theatre with students and families from throughout Central New York. A title has not yet been chosen for the 2013 Spring production, but the scheduled dates will be May 24, 25, June 1, 7, 8, 14 and 15.
