Beilein’s Past, ’09 Win Over SU Provides Le Moyne with National Exposure Leading Up to National Semi-final Game

This year's NCAA basketball tournament is proving to be quite beneficial for Le Moyne, as the connection to two of the teams that made it to the Final Four -- Michigan and Syracuse -- have resulted in hundreds of mentions in the media for the College.

The University of Michigan is led by former Dolphins Coach John Beilein, who served in that capacity at Le Moyne from 1983 to 1992. That connection, in addition to the relationship that Syracuse University Coach Jim Boeheim has with Beilein, has been recounted in numerous columns and stories that have appeared in literally every corner of the U.S

Some of the more prominent mentions were a column by John Niyo in the Detroit News, a column that appeared in the Detroit Free Press, a column by Mitch Albom, and a column by Gannett’s Mike Lopresti. Chicago Tribune columnist Shannon Ryan also mentioned the Beilein-Boeheim connection, as did David Jones, a columnist with the Patriot News in Pennsylvania.

Le Moyne is also mentioned in the press conference transcripts for both Beilein and Boeheim.

Also getting play in numerous outlets was the fact that the last time Syracuse played man-to-man defense was the team’s November 2009 exhibition game against Le Moyne, when the Orange lost to the Dolphins 82 to 79. A story mentioning the upset appeared in USA Today and was subsequently picked up by more than 100 other publications.

Locally, Syracuse Post-Standard columnist Sean Kirst has a lengthy column today on the Beilein’s time at Le Moyne and his connection to former Athletic Director Tom Niland, and a story by sports reporter Mike Waters recounts the Beilein-Boeheim connection.

In addition to print and online, Le Moyne has been mentioned several times on the CBS national broadcasts, and the College provided the network with several photos of Beilein during his time on the Heights, which will be used for this weekend’s coverage.
