Le Moyne College Receives National Recognition for Community Service

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (For Immediate Release) … For the sixth consecutive year, the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) and the U.S. Department of Education has honored Le Moyne College as a leader among institutions of higher education for its commitment to community service and service learning. Announced at the American Council on Education’s 95th Annual Meeting “Leading Change” this week in Washington, D.C., Le Moyne was named to the 2013 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for engaging its students, faculty and staff in meaningful service that achieves measurable results in the community.

“Once again, Le Moyne is honored to receive this national recognition,” said Gloria Heffernan, director of service learning at Le Moyne. “This award recognizes the hard work and commitment of our students, faculty and community partners. Service to others is a hallmark of Jesuit education, and we are proud that our efforts are being recognized.”

The President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll recognizes higher education institutions that reflect the values of exemplary community service and achieve meaningful outcomes in their communities. Inspired by the thousands of college students who traveled across the country to support relief efforts along the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina, the initiative celebrates the transformative power and volunteer spirit that exists within the higher education community.

Le Moyne has been honored every year since the inception of the CNCS honor roll in 2006. Click on this link for more information and a full list of recipients.

CNCS oversees the Honor Roll in collaboration with the U.S. Departments of Education and Housing and Urban Development, Campus Compact, and the American Council on Education. Honorees are chosen based on a series of selection factors, including the scope and innovation of service projects, the extent to which service-learning is embedded in the curriculum, the school’s commitment to long-term campus-community partnerships, and measurable community outcomes as a result of the service.
