Le Moyne College Hosts Week-Long Effort to Raise Awareness and Funds for Haiti Relief

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (For Immediate Release) … Le Moyne College will hold a series of events during the week of Feb. 8 to highlight the continuing crisis in Haiti and to raise funds to support the relief efforts there. Some of the highlighted events include:

Mon., Feb. 8, 4:30 p.m.
Grewen Auditorium
Partners, Not Patrons, Part I
Panel discussion on Haiti and Hispaniola with Orlando Ocampo, chair of the foreign languages and literatures department; Donald Maldari, S.J., religious studies professor, who lived in Haiti; Megan Lee, a recent Haiti volunteer with Haiti Outreach Pwoje Espwa (H.O.P.E.); and Lia Henry, a student whose family has adopted a baby from Haiti. Following the panel discussion, there will be a candlelight vigil on the steps of Grewen Hall.

Wed., Feb. 10, noon – 1:30 p.m.

Special Teleconference: Haiti Earthquake Update from Doctors Without Borders (Medecins Sans Frontieres)
Speakers include: Dr. Greg Elder, medical director for MSF programs in Haiti, Somalia, Uganda and Nigeria; Jordan Wiley, logistician who was in Port-au-Prince when the earthquake hit; and Sophie Delaunay, MSF executive director in the United States.

Panel discussion on Haiti with Susan Behuniak, political science; Harjit Arora, economics; Fred Glennon, religious studies.

All of the above events are free and open to the public. Wristbands will be available for a donation of $5.

Other student activities planned for the week include:

Wear Blue for Haiti Day on Tues., Feb. 9

Wed., Feb. 10, 10 p.m.
Bingo for Haiti, The Den
All proceeds will go directly to Haiti relief efforts.

Thurs., Feb. 11, 9 p.m.
Le Moyne Talent Showcase, The Den
Student acts covering a wide range of talents, all in efforts to help raise money for the people of Haiti.

Students will be able to attend all events by purchasing a special Haiti relief bracelet for $5.

Also planned is a fundraising lunch ($5 donation) for faculty and staff on Thurs., Feb. 11, in the Campus Center.

Throughout the week, the Noreen Reale Falcone Library will host a display of books and articles about Haiti.
