Le Moyne Hosts Masterclass on Mark Twain

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (For Immediate Release) … Kerry Driscoll will conduct a masterclass at Le Moyne College which explores Mark Twain’s status as a literary icon on Thursday, March 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the Reilley Room, located in Reilly Hall.

Was he, as William Dean Howells claimed, "the Lincoln of our literature"? Was he, as Ernest Hemingway wrote, "the best that we've got?” Using such classic Twain texts as “The Literary Offenses of James Fenimore Cooper,” “The Whittier Birthday Speech” and selections from “Huck Finn” and “Tom Sawyer,” Kerry Driscoll, Ph.D., of St. Joseph College, will explore exactly what sort of writing Twain rejected and what sort he discovered. And in the end, she’ll discuss the legitimacy of the claim that "all American literature" begins with Mark Twain.

This event is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the Department of English, the Office of the Dean of Arts and Sciences, and the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. For more information, call (315) 445-4247.
