Junior First in College History Selected for Prestigious NIST Fellowship

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (For Immediate Release) ... Le Moyne Junior Andrew Acquaviva has been selected by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to participate in its Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program at the NIST national headquarters in Gaithersburg, Maryland. With this invitation, Acquaviva becomes the first student in Le Moyne history to be offered one of these prestigious fellowships.

“This remarkable honor, a first for a Le Moyne student, is an indication of the caliber of students on our campus,” said Dr. Linda LeMura, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Le Moyne. “We are extremely proud of Andrew, who worked closely with faculty to learn about and apply for the SURF program.”

Individuals who receive SURF fellowships work alongside scientists and researchers at NIST, one of the world’s leading research organizations and home to three Nobel Prize winners. Participants gain valuable hands-on experience in a premier research environment and work with cutting-edge technology. The SURF program is open to students at a U.S. college or university with a science major and a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Students invited to participate as fellows under this program spend eleven weeks over the summer at one of six NIST research centers across the nation.

A mathematics major (with a dual minor in physics and in music) and MVP of the 2009-2010 Swimming and Diving Team, Acquaviva has applied for other research opportunities and is now considering all of his options. He is from Delmar, N.Y.
