Promotion of Social Justice Issues

“The mission of the Society of Jesus is the service of faith, of which the promotion of justice is an absolute requirement, for reconciliation with God demands the reconciliation of people with one another.”
–32nd General Congregation of the Society of Jesus

Ignatian House, Amnesty International, Habitat for Humanity and the Ignatian Family Teach-In are just a few of the social justice programs sponsored by Campus Ministry that embody the hallmarks of a Le Moyne College education. Student participants deepen their relationship with God through consciousness-raising activities that challenge them to integrate faith and justice.

Alternative Breaks

The Alternative Break Program provides national and international service and learning opportunities for the students, faculty and staff of Le Moyne College. The goal of the program is for student participants to deepen their relationships with God through:

  • Sharing in the lives of those living in poverty through short-term service projects and living experiences.
  • Reflecting critically on issues of faith and justice.
  • Being exposed to the wonderful diversity of God’s creations through an encounter with those living in a culture different from their own.
  • Offering their skills, resources and gifts for the purpose of creating a more just world.
  • Envisioning spiritual life articulated in the gospel message and the church’s call for a “preferential option for the poor.” This is Campus Ministry’s attempt to integrate faith and justice.

Campus Ministry

Campus Ministry provides students and staff with a number of ways to reflect on their faith and give back to their community.

Campus Ministry offers sacramental preparation for those who would like to receive the sacraments of baptism, communion and confirmation. In addition, Campus Ministry also hosts a retreat program that focuses on diverse forms of prayer and reflection. During retreats, participants are encouraged to take part in the Le Moyne community through service, worship and fellowship. Students are also invited to serve as liturgical ministers during Masses on campus.

Along with providing members of the Le Moyne community a place to pray and reflect, Campus Ministry also finds ways for them to give back to others. Campus Ministry sponsors Alternative Breaks, where students devote their vacation to performing community service, for instance building a home for Habitat for Humanity. They also take part in Projects in the Community, in which students put the Jesuit ideals of service into action, donating food to the Inter-religious Food Consortium, tutoring children and volunteering at hospitals.

Campus Ministry is also dedicated to creating a climate of community at Le Moyne. Each Wednesday students and staff are invited to come together to share a meal, work in local soup kitchen and experience different forms of prayer.

Lastly, Campus Ministry has trained professionals who are available for the psychological, emotional and spiritual needs of Le Moyne staff and students. Issues discussed in pastoral counseling are confidential and include work or peer relationships, self-esteem and grief.
