Federal and State Veterans Educational Benefits 

Federal Veterans Affairs Educational Benefits Are Available Through The Following:

Chapter 30 -The Montgomery GI Bill-Active Duty provides up to 36 months of education benefits for eligible veterans. In general, this bill is for individuals who entered acitve duty for the first time after June 30, 1985, had an honorable discharge, a high school diploma or GED, and who had military pay reduced by $100 for the first 12 months of service. For additional eligibility information, please visit the link provided above.

Chapter 31- Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (VR & E) is for veterans with service-connected disabilities. Generally, with this program, the VA will pay 100% of tuition and fees, books, supplies, equipment and special services for up to 48 months. Also, while in school, the VA will pay a monthly benefit to assist with liviing expenses.

Chapter 32-The Post-Vietnam Veterans Educational Assistance Program  (VEAP) is for individuals who first entered active duty after December 31, 1976 and before July 1, 1985, contributed to VEAP before April 1, 1987, completed the first period of service, and have been discharged under conditions other than dishonorable. Benefits generally last up to 36 months.  

Chapter 33** - The Post-9/11 GI Bill is for individuals with at least 90 days of aggregate service on or after September 11, 2001, or individuals discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days. You must have received an honorable discharge to be eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill. The Post-9/11 GI Bill will become effective for training on or after August 1, 2009. Individuals will generally be eligible for up to 36 months of education benefits.

**NOTE: The U.S. Department of Veteran's Affairs has announced the educational benefits for eligible veterans that have served since September 11th, 2001. To be eligible to receive 100% of the 36 month benefit, the veteran must have served a minimum of 36 months of active duty. If less time was served, the percentage of benefit is prorated and the amounts can be found at www.va.gov/GIBill.  

Chapter 35 - The Dependents Educational Assistance Program (DEA) is for the dependents or spouses of an Armed Forces member who is permanently and totally disabled for a service-connected reason or has died while on active duty. Dependents are eligible for benefits between the ages of 18 and 26. However, in certain circumstances, this range may be altered (See above link for specifics) Generally, dependents and spouses receive up to 45 months of full-time benefits.
 

Chapter 1606- The Montgomery GI Bill - Selective Reserves is for individuals in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Coprs, and Coast Guard Reserves, as well as the Army and Air Force National Guard. Individuals are eligible if after June 30, 1985, have signed a 6-year obligation and are in good standing in a drilling unit. Benefits are available as long as the individual remains in the reserves. Generally, individuals receive up to 36 months of education benefits.

Chapter 1607 - The Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP) is a new benefit providing educational assistance to members of the reserve components - Selected Reserve (Sel Res) and Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) - who are called or ordered to active service in response to a war or national emergency, as declared by the President or Congress. Generally, individuals receive up to 36 months of education benefits.

New York State Veterans Affairs Educational Benefits Are Available Through The Following:

New York State Veterans Tuition Award - for full-time study and part-time study for eligible veterans matriculated at an public or private undergraduate or graduate degree-granting institution. The benefit is available for up to 8 semesters and the amount of the award is capped at 98% of the public tuition (for 2009-2010 - $4,895.10).Eligible students are those who are New York State residents discharged under honorable conditions from the U.S. Armed forces and who are:

1) Vietnam Veterans who served in Indochina between February 28, 1961 and May 7, 1975.

2) Persian Gulf Veterans who served in the Persian Gulf on or after August 2, 1990. 
    Afghanistan Veterans 
who served in Afghanistan during hostilities on or after 
    September 11, 2001.

3) Veterans of the armed forces of the United States who served in hostilities that occurred
    after February 28, 1961 as evidenced by receipt of an Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal,
    Navy Expeditionary Medal or a Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal.
