Dr. Schmidt's research revolves around the ABC's of Cultural Understanding and Communication, a model she created to help in-service and pre-service educators implement culturally responsive teaching. Her books, book chapters, and journal articles demonstrate teacher adaptations of the model for the literacy development of students from language minority backgrounds in urban and rural schools.
