Symposium (The Student Philosophy Club)

Symposium meets bi-weekly and events are determined entirely by student interest. Most often, meetings take the form of discussions. We've discussed a broad range of topics (animal rights, science and religion, existentialism, friendship, the nature of time), as well as several philosophically interesting movies. Faculty are always encouraged and welcome to attend our meetings, and occasionally we ask them to share their work with us. Symposium also sponsors a couple of special events per year. Past events include staging a dramatic reading of Jean Paul Sartre's No Exit, attending John Patrick Shanley's Doubt at Syracuse Stage, and hosting year-end gatherings with philosophy faculty and students.

Phi Sigma Tau (New York ETA Chapter)
Purpose
Phi Sigma Tau’s purpose is to serve as a means of awarding distinction to students having high scholarship and personal interest in philosophy, to promote student interest in research and advanced study in this field; to provide opportunities for the publication of student research papers of merit; to encourage a professional spirit and friendship among those who have displayed marked ability in this field; to popularize interest in philosophy among the general collegiate public.
Awarding Distinction
In the Spring semester, students who meet the criteria for admission into Phi Sigma Tau are inducted in a public ceremony. The winner of the annual Essay Contest is also honored, as is the winner of the Leonard P. Markert Medal in Philosophy, awarded to an outstanding graduating philosophy major. There is a reception with the whole philosophy department, families and friends with good food and good spirits (not the drinkable kind).
The 2012 Honors Ceremony was held on Monday, May 7th, in the Bernat Special Events Room in the Library. Make your plans to join us next year - hopefully as an awardee! "Let no one delay the study of philosophy when young, nor weary of it when old" (Epicurus).
National Organization

Philosophy Essay Contest
The Department of Philosophy and the Le Moyne chapter of Phi Sigma Tau sponsor an annual essay contest open to all Le Moyne College students. Papers should be
- typed, double-spaced, 5-7 pages long
- prepared for anonymous review (make sure your name appears only on the cover page)
- submitted (usually by March 15th) to Prof. Tabor Fisher either electronically at fisherct@lemoyne.edu or by hard copy to RH 436
The first prize winner receives $100 and is honored at the Department of Philosophy Honors Ceremony in April.
