The edTPA is one of the new certification exams mandated by New York State, required for anyone applying for NYS Initial Certification in any content area, P-12, if you are graduating after April 2014.
The edTPA is designed as a capstone assessment of your teaching skills during student teaching, focusing on planning, instruction, assessment of student learning, and analysis of one’s teaching. The emphasis is not on “What did I cover?” or “How did it go?” but on “How have I affected student learning?”
During student teaching, candidates teach a learning segment of 3-5 lessons in an “arc of instruction” and submit lesson plans, 1-2 video clips of instruction (with an emphasis on engaged students and teacher scaffolding for mastery of skills and higher order thinking), student work samples, and the teacher’s detailed analysis of every stage of the planning-instruction-assessment process. The goal is for the student teacher to provide thorough documentation of and reflection upon her/his impact on student learning.
