New Certificate in Accountancy Offered Beginning in January 2014

To meet the rapidly growing market demand for accountants, beginning with the Spring 2014 semester Le Moyne College will offer the first course leading to a 29-Credit Certificate in Accountancy. All courses will be offered in the evenings and on weekends to accommodate the schedules of working professionals, and are arranged to be completed over a two-year period.
“Given the unprecedented surge in demand for accounting expertise both in this region and nationally, we anticipate significant interest in this new program,” said Joan Myers, Ph.D., chair of Le Moyne’s Accounting Department. “It builds on the College’s legacy of excellence in accounting education and our rich history of producing accountants for firms and companies of all sizes and specialties.”
Within three years of applying to the program, applicants must have taken the equivalent of financial and managerial accounting, or six credits of introductory accounting. Courses offered as part of the certificate will either be held on the Le Moyne campus or in a hybrid (part online, part in-person) format. Current part-time rates of $618 per credit hour will apply for tuition. Le Moyne alumni are offered the reduced rate of $500 per credit hour for courses in the certificate program.
Once they have successfully completed the certificate program courses, graduates will be able to compete for entry-level accounting positions in the private sector. According to the New York State Department of Labor's Regional Labor Report 2010-2020, employment prospects in this field are “very favorable” with an average of 90 job openings per year in Central New York. Beyond that, the report indicates that employment prospects for accountants statewide are also very favorable, with 3,570 job openings expected annually. Public accounting firms require accounting graduates to staff their auditing, taxation and consulting departments. Large and small organizations, both for profit and nonprofit, across a variety of industries, require accounting staff for internal and external reporting and financial analysis.
This certificate program is ideal for individuals who are interested in careers in private accounting or certified public accounting. It is designed for people who hold an undergraduate degree in business and is also appropriate for those with undergraduate degrees in other disciplines who are interested in pursuing a Master of Business Administration.
For those who completed courses more than three years ago, there will be an on-line refresher course (ACT 203 Financial Accounting) starting on Dec. 16 as part of Le Moyne’s J-mester session for $300 per credit hour. Learn more here. The first course offered in the certificate is Intermediate Accounting I (ACT 301, T-Th 5:30 to 7:15 p.m.) beginning on Jan. 21, 2014. Learn more about registration here.
