    Le Moyne College Religion and Literature Forum Presents an International Conference on "Sacred Literature, Secular Religion"

    Syracuse will be the site of a major international conference that will explore how religious and secular concerns overlap and inform modes of belief and forms of pious (and impious) expression. Hosted by Le Moyne College, the conference will take place from Thursday, Oct. 1 to Saturday, Oct. 3 at the Syracuse Crown Plaza Hotel, 701 E. Genesee Street in Syracuse. THE CONFERENCE IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

    More than 100 speakers from eight nations and 26 states are expected, from undergraduates to advanced professors.

    Keynote speakers are:

    Richard A. Rosengarten, Dean and Associate Professor of Religion and Literature, University of Chicago Divinity School -- “Substantial Accidents, Accidental Substances: The Inverted Eucharistic Theology of Flannery O’Connor."

    Amila Buturovic, Associate Professor of Humanities, York University -- “Secular Poetics and Religious Politics of Death: Remembering the Victims of Genocide in Post-War Bosnia and Herzegovina"

    Cynthia Robinson, Professor in the Department of the History of Art and Visual Studies, Mary Donlon Alger Professor of Medieval and Islamic Art of Cornell University --“Desert and Palace: Poetics of Place in Nasrid Poems to the Prophet."

    John Lardas Modern, Associate Professor of Religious Studies, Franklin & Marshall College -- “Scannings"

    Amy Hollywood, Elizabeth H. Monrad Professor of Christian Studies at Harvard Divinity School -- “Secular Death"

    There will also be 32 panel discussions taking place over the duration of the conference, covering such topics as "God in American Popular Culture," "Retelling Time and Nation for Religious America," "Sacred and Secular, In Profession and In Print," and "When Good is Evil."

    Among the institutions represented by scholars, professors and graduate students on the panel discussions are: the University of California, Berkeley; Syracuse University; Harvard University; Arizona State University; New York University; Williams College; Le Moyne College; Case Western Reserve University; Oxford University; Johns Hopkins University; Bishop's University; Franklin and Marshall College; University of Notre Dame; Rutgers University; Marquette University; Aberystwyth University; University of Cologne; Princeton University; Georgetown University; York University; Loyola University of Chicago; Baylor University, and; Catholic University of America.

    Conference sponsors are: Hamilton College; the Central New York Humanities Corridor (funded by the Mellon Foundation); Syracuse University's Departments of Religion and English; and Le Moyne College's McDevitt Center and the Madden School of Business.
