Learning does not occur in isolation. At Le Moyne College, we encourage each student to become an active learner, and that includes utilizing the skills and experience of our outstanding faculty and a host of curricular and co-curricular opportunities that are available.
The Academic Advisement Center, located in 342 Reilly Hall, meets the varied academic needs and interests of our students through a comprehensive, collaborative team approach to academic counseling. We provide personal advising, tutoring and other academic support services, a first-year learning communities program, study abroad opportunities, services for students with disabilities, and advising to support our international students.
The Academic Advisement Center at Le Moyne College promotes a comprehensive, mission-guided, developmental advising system that seeks to address the needs of students while supporting the collaborative work of faculty and administrators who are advising these students. The Center is directed by the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and the Academic Advising Committee, a faculty-led group whose members play an integral role in the student advisement process.
Le Moyne’s advising system strongly emphasizes collaborative efforts between Academic Affairs and Student Development in an effort to support the development of the whole student.
"Academic advising is the only structured activity on the college campus in which all students have the opportunity for one-on-one interaction with a concerned representative of the institution."
- Wes Habley, director of ACT's Office for the Enhancement of Educational Practices

The Advisement Process at Le Moyne College
Academic advising at Le Moyne College begins far in advance of the arrival of the new student on campus. It continues as an important component of your academic life throughout your time at Le Moyne. Learn how the advisement process builds as you proceed through your coursework at the College.
Before the First Semester of College
If you are a first-year student, your advisement begins well before the first day of classes. Once you decide to attend Le Moyne, you will have access to a pre-orientation website that prepares you for meeting with your advisor during summer orientation. Our two-day summer orientation is designed to ease transition and to acquaint you and your parents with the College’s faculty, administrators, and services. During the registration portion of summer orientation, you will learn about our core curriculum, major requirements and other opportunities in your major. You will also plan a fall course schedule with your advisor. First-year students also participate in the Summer Reading Project, a common experience co-sponsored by Academic Affairs and the Office of Student Development. The reading project creates a shared intellectual experience for incoming students, inspires dialogue and debate, and encourages the entire College community to appreciate differences of opinion. The topic for the reading project changes each year.
During the First Year of College
In the Fall, we link first-year advisement to the First-year Advisement Seminar, better known as AVS 101. This is a one-credit, graded course required of all first-year students that assists in your transition to Le Moyne. Your first-year advisor will also teach your section of AVS 101 and, in most cases, will be a faculty member or administrator in your major or a related major. If you have not declared a major by the time of your arrival at the College, you will be assigned an advisor especially knowledgeable about self-assessment and major exploration. In addition to attending AVS 101 and meeting periodically with your advisor during your first semester, you will choose from a variety of “short courses” designed around various topics, from life skills issues to current events and scholarly topics. Other programming designed exclusively for first-year students are an International Street Fair and Study Abroad Fair in the Fall and The Major Event and Internship Fair in the Spring.
Departmental Advising for Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors and Recent Transfers
Once students complete their first year at Le Moyne, they transition into our Departmental Advising Program. If you have declared a major, you will be advised by the department chair (or his/her designee) in your major. If you remain undeclared after the first year or you are a new transfer student, the Director of Advising (or her designee) will be your advisor.
Students should have individual meetings with their advisor several times during the semester. These meetings are particularly important prior to registration for the following semester, since academic advisors must review each advisee’s proposed schedule before the advisee can be cleared to register for classes. Meetings with your advisor will also encourage discussion about your major/minor, graduate school and career planning. Some departments schedule group advising to inform students about activities and new classes in their major, while others offer special programming and events on major-related topics such as research opportunities and departmental internships.
