Institutional Review Board

JUST ADDED - CITI is an acronym for Collaborative IRB Training Initiative. CITI is a course in the protection of human research subjects. It has served as a convenient way to prepare researchers and Institutional Review Board members for Federal regulations regarding research with human subjects. This educational program consists of a basic course for investigators conducting social/behavioral research and biomedical research. The 28 modules are specific to particular studies and could be included in course syllabi for Le Moyne students. (Click on to CITI in the sidebar to connect to the site.)

Le Moyne College has a documented policy and procedure for the protection of persons involved as subjects of research. The IRB addresses specific categories for proposal review. Le Moyne College students and applicants outside the college need a college sponsor. IRB approval is required before any data collection can commence.

In general, the IRB defines three categories of research with human subjects:

  1. Research that is exempt from formal review (requires Form A and Form RO)
  2. Research involving no more than minimal risk which can be an expedited review (requires Form B and Form RO)
  3. Research with risk and research involving children, minors, and persons with disabilities which needs formal review (requires Form C and Form RO)

All the required forms can be found in the Form Library below. Please contact the IRB with any questions.

Instructions

  • Please return one (1) copy of Forms A or B. Please return ten (10) copies of Form C. All forms are returned to the current IRB Director.
  • Please also attach to either Form A,B or C the Research Outline Form (Form RO) which requires a brief description of the planned research.
  • Other components, e.g. parent consent, school administration consent, institutional consent, samples of surveys or interview questions must also be submitted.
  • Education majors are required to submit IRB Checklist Form A , IRB Checklist Form B, or IRB Checklist Form C
  • All proposals are to be submitted to the IRB for a final decision whether or not the proposal needs formal review as in 3 above.
  • The IRB Committee wishes to emphasize the importance of a well-executed proposal that addresses each of the specific inquiries contained in the document. Proposals that are difficult to understand may require the committee to return them or to contact experts in the field for interpretation. A cover letter containing pertinent information and contact numbers is helpful.
  • Additionally, since this is a public document, in part, we ask all researchers to double check their proposals for correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  • Please allow three to four weeks for a response from the Committee regarding Form C. A shorter time can be allowed for Forms A and B.
