O'Connell Programs for 2011-2014

Most of our work as teachers takes place inside the classroom with our students, with the door firmly (if figuratively) shut. While there are sound pedagogical reasons for this, it has the disadvantage of leaving us mostly in the dark about how our colleagues teach. As we move toward implementing a new Core Curriculum, we will need to draw on our own collective resources as a faculty. The O’Connell programs for 2011-14 will present opportunities for faculty to share materials and ideas, discuss scholarly and pedagogical practices, and open our classrooms to one another, both literally and figuratively, so that we can pursue curricular and pedagogical innovation in the years to come.
These programs will focus on helping faculty develop the pedagogies that are highlighted for further development in the new Core: writing instruction, interdisciplinary inquiry, and lecture. As currently envisioned, the O’Connell programs include:
- a faculty writing retreat, in development for summer ’12, with workshops and discussions about the writing process with Dr. Ned Stuckey-French, a nonfiction writer and professor of writing at Florida State University;
- workshop for faculty developing new writing instructive courses for the core and in the majors;
- workshop on current interdisciplinary practices and how to build on these as we develop new interdisciplinary courses; and
- a faculty lecture series designed to illuminate the pedagogies of lecture.
There will also be some funds available for sponsorship of activities related to these programs (e.g., speakers, events, panels). Proposals should indicate specific points of connection with the programs of Opening the Classroom, and the ways in which proposed activity will benefit the faculty at large.
