For Le Moyne Senior, Working at ESPN is Living a Dream

Thomas Stamas ’14 never imagined that he would land his dream job at age 22 – but he has. A communication major, Stamas is spending the spring 2014 semester in Bristol, Conn., where he is working as an intern for ESPN. It has been Stamas’ ambition since he was a senior at Colonie Central High School in Colonie, N.Y., and now it has become a reality.

“This internship been a fantastic experience,” he said. “When I first heard about it, I thought it was probably a long shot. I am so glad that I applied, and that it’s worked out so well.”

What makes the internship unique is that, following two weeks of training and observation, Stamas has taken on the responsibilities of a full-time production assistant. He was recently responsible for compiling highlights for the Purdue-Nebraska men’s basketball game, which included researching the game, developing story lines, logging every major play and, of course, editing clips from the game for air on deadline. His work behind the scenes is instrumental in helping ESPN’s anchors discuss games on air. To that end, Stamas said the work “is stressful, but it’s also incredibly enjoyable to make games appealing even to casual fans.”

Among the lessons he has learned during his internship are to budget his time – he is often racing the clock when he is preparing highlights for SportsCenter – and to accept constructive criticism without dwelling on it or letting it negatively impact his work.

Prior to his role at ESPN, Stamas worked a sports intern for CNY Central and a production intern at Time Warner Cable Sports Channel which, along with his experience on air and behind the scenes at LCTV, helped to prepare him for this adventure.

“When I first became interested in this field, I wanted to be a SportsCenter anchor, and I would still love to do that,” he said. “However, I’ve found that I also really enjoy working behind the camera. Being a producer may be a new dream of mine.”

Communications Students Travel to the Big Apple

ImageThis post was written by Valerie Proano, sophomore Communications student.  She was part of a group of Le Moyne College students who traveled to New York City with Professor Ann Allen and Professor Leslie Streissguth. Although a native of Queens, Valarie was not prepared for the range of experience the group had that day:

"Now being that I am from Queens, I was so excited to be going back home for the day, but I did not expect to see or experience new things since I have lived in the city my whole life. So going into the trip, I just figured it would be a nice break from classes, but I was certainly wrong to say the least! Our trip consisted of two stops, Yankee Stadium in the Bronx and then we ventured over into Manhattan and we visited Madison Square Garden."
