Internships

Communication and film studies majors and minors have worked as interns in radio, television, advertising, public relations and journalism, for companies and organizations such as ESPN, The American Cancer Society, Eric Mower & Associates, WSTM-TV and the New York Mets.  Through those and many other internships, students have gained practical, on-the-job training that has prepared them for work after graduation.

If you would like an internship, the first step is to take the appropriate courses.  For instance, if you want a newspaper internship, you should have taken a journalism course; if you are looking for a production internship, you should have taken a studio operations course.  Some internships, however, may have more specific prerequisites, and you should find out by consulting with the communications program's internship director, Professor Leslie Bailey Streissguth.

You may take up to three three-credit internships.  During your internship, you will be expected to devote 10 hours each week to the agency for which you are working.  You must also keep a detailed journal of your activities, as well as meet occasionally with the internship director to have that journal reviewed and to discuss your interning experience.

The internship director assigns you a grade for your internship based on your journal, individual conferences and an evaluation from the agency for which you worked.  This is a pass/fail course.

  2. Look through the listings to find several internship sites that interest you. In addition, you should feel free to pursue a communication internship that is not listed on the site. We ask only that you secure Professor Leslie Bailey Streissguth’s approval before committing to it. Please provide her with a description of your duties and a contact person at the job site (contact information is needed, as well).
  3. Make a priority list of those internships you have selected. Take note of the contact information for each and call or send an email the site supervisor with a request for an interview.
  4. If you need assistance or advice on selecting an internship, or on how to approach a site supervisor, contact Professor Leslie Bailey Streissguth at streislb@lemoyne.edu.
  5. Once you secure an interview ask if there are any documents you need to bring with you to the interview (for example, a résumé, writing samples, etc.)
  6. When you secure an internship, contact Professor L. Streissguth so that she can release you to register for CMM 490,491, or 492. You have until the last day of the drop- add period in the new semester to secure your internship. Remember, you can take up to three different internships for credit during your time here at Le Moyne. You can talk with Professor Leslie Bailey Streissguth about this, as well.
  7. Obtain a copy of the Internship Guidelines and Requirements document from Prof. Leslie Bailey Streissguth. This will list the academic requirements you must meet in order to receive internship credit. If you have any questions don’t hesitate ask  for clarification.
  8. Discuss the internship requirements and your work schedule with your site supervisor. Most internship site supervisors will work your internship hours around your class schedule.
  9. Your internship should begin the first or second week of the spring semester in order to complete the 140 hours required.
  10. Enjoy this experience. It will lead to an understanding of the workplace culture. It will help you to improve in the skills of your profession. It will establish a network of contacts that will prove valuable to you when you graduate. It may even lead to a job!
