Theatre Arts Degrees and Requirements

 

    

Theatre Arts Major

The Theatre Arts Major is based on a liberal arts curriculum that requires majors to fully participate in the undergraduate core, read extensively in the field, and acquire a solid and broad-based knowledge of the fundamental principles of the art form. 

Theatre is a collaborative art and, while majors may specialize in one area of theatre arts (design, performance, literature, etc.) we believe that our students are best served by understanding all aspects of creative production. Designers who also act have a better sense of what the actor requires on the stage; actors who have studied design can better appreciate the production as a whole and more clearly understand their contribution.

 

STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Mission Statement for the Theatre Arts Major

The primary responsibility of the Le Moyne College Theatre program is to provide effective instruction to students in theatre arts within the liberal-arts environment and Jesuit tradition of Le Moyne. This instruction includes experiences to promote creativity, theatrical artistry, intellectual growth, and personal development. A further responsibility is to lead students in the production of vivid theatrical events for the Le Moyne and surrounding communities that engage audiences in the range, vitality, and contributions of the theatre to the issues of both society and the individual.  

Student Learning Objectives (SLO) for the Theatre Arts Program 

Central to the mission of Le Moyne College is the commitment to the education of the whole person, with the visual and performing arts playing a significant role in endowing our students with a strong sense of leadership, initiative and the spirit of inquiry. The unique and dynamic culture within our Theatre Program and the Performing Arts Center encourages and rewards a sense of adventure and an exuberant yet disciplined approach to creative expression. The core of our theatre work therefore lies in consistently providing students with opportunities to learn their craft by introducing fundamental foundations of theatre arts, to plant the seeds of this foundation in unaccustomed earth through the trial and error of experimentation, and to ultimately make the cognitive and experiential leaps that will result in successful implementation of these creative works for an audience. Through the tripartite processes of Foundation, Experimentation, and Implementation, the Theatre Arts program at Le Moyne allows our students to mature and develop in a way that best suits them as individuals, and ultimately providing them with a myriad of potential post-graduate outcomes as creative artists and proactive leaders.

 

Foundations

In order to break the rules, we must first have a solid grasp of them. All theatre program students are exposed to a wide variety of basic introductory concepts as the first step towards greater mastery of the craft.

SLO 1. Understanding of the fundamental languages and expressive elements of theatre.

SLO 2. Understanding of the preparation process, techniques, and challenges of performance in the art of acting

SLO 3. Understanding of the research and creative process required for successful designs for theatre 

SLO 4. Acquisition of the basic skills and methods required for successful technical practice in scenic, lighting, costume, and audio production

SLO 5. Knowledge of literary analysis and methods of interpretation for contemporary and period dramatic texts and familiarity with major works in theatrical history

 

Experimentation

Experimentation offers students in the Theatre Program the opportunity to stretch their understanding of theatrical fundamentals in new and often unexpected directions and a richer long-term educational experience.  Through the trial and error of experimentation, students will gain the opportunity to connect the fundamental dots themselves and to organically generate their own idiosyncratic, creative problem-solving techniques. 

SLO 6. Understanding of the dynamics and practices of successful theatrical collaboration and communication, as well as the process of effective production leadership

SLO 7. Incorporation of interdisciplinary interests and elements into theatrical expression and creative endeavors  

Implementation

Public performances or presentations are the opportunity to put into practice both the foundations and the results of the experimentation and are, quite simply, the apotheosis of our program.  Through a variety of performances and presentations, theatre students are given the opportunity to test both their understanding of the fundamentals and the knowledge they’ve gained through various experiments in and out of the classroom. The exhilarating pressure introduced by the prospect of an audience necessitates an increased amount of focus, attention to detail, and care for the work.  The pressure of constantly performing, presenting, and implementing the skills learned in their classes and in productions across the four years of the theatre major will encourage bold risk taking, take the sting out of failure, make practical the theoretical, prepare students to boldly present creative work to be shared outside of the comfort of the academy, and provide teachers and students with the oldest evaluative resource in the theatre: an audience.  

SLO 8. Understanding of the process of theatrical direction and ensemble playmaking from concept to creation to presentation for an audience, with an emphasis on work using non-traditional spaces with non-traditional audiences and collaborators

SLO 9. Understanding of administrative structures, issues, and methods in theatrical production in educational, community and professional theatre organizations 

SLO 10. Understanding of how theatre arts can be utilized to build community, serve the underserved, empower individuals, and effect positive social change

[1] Courses in this area must include one performance class and at least one design class. [2] The nine hours must be in one language, if however a minimum of six hours of language at the College level, a student has completed or advanced beyond the mid-intermediate level, he or she may substitute a theatre arts elective for remaining hours.

Core Requirements

 

Theatre Arts Double Majors

The theatre arts program has partnered with other departments to offer students the option of a dual major. Theatre majors may add a second major in the following subjects: Psychology, Communications, English Literature, English Literature with a concentration in creative writing, History, Political Science, Philosophy, Peace and Global Studies, Spanish or French. Students interested in pursuing a double major in order to earn two BA degrees during their four years at the college should contact the director of theater arts for more information.

 

Theatre Arts Minor

Non-majors are welcome to study theatre arts as a minor. To complete a theatre arts minor, The following courses are required:
