Spanish Poet/Critic to Deliver Book Talk at Le Moyne College

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (For Immediate Release) … Renowned Spanish poet, critic, professor and translator Aurora Luque will speak at Le Moyne College about Isabel Oyarzábal Smith’s book, “Hunger for Freedom: a Memoir of a Woman Ambassador in the Spanish Republic” on Monday, Oct. 3, at 4 p.m. The talk takes place in the Reilley Room, located in Reilly Hall. Luque translated Smith’s book into Spanish and prepared the introduction.

Luque will talk about this unique and multifaceted woman who lived to defend freedom in a crucial historical time in Spain. In 1930 Smith became the only female in the Slavery Permanent Commission of the League of Nations. In 1936, the first year of the civil war, she was the Spanish ambassador in Sweden, and she vigorously defended the Spanish Republic in all the International forums. Her book is a good example of the country's efforts, 25 years after Franco's dictatorship, to restore the Spanish historical memory.

The talk will be held in Spanish. Orlando Ocampo, foreign languages and literature, will provide the simultaneous English translation.

The event is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the Center for Peace & Global Studies, department of foreign languages and literature and the Spanish Club. For more information, call (315) 445-4317.
