Le Moyne Hosts Economic Historian at Forum

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (For Immediate Release) … Le Moyne College hosts Martha Olney, visiting professor of economics at Siena College, at its Spring 2012 Economics Forum, to be held on Thursday, March 29, at 7 p.m. in Grewen Auditorium. Her talk is titled “Understanding Today’s Economy: When Thrift is Not a Virtue.”

Olney is an economic historian whose research focuses on consumer spending, saving and indebtedness in the early 20th century. She is the author of “Buy Now, Pay Later: Advertising, Credit, and Consumer Durables in the 1920s,” several economic history articles and multiple textbooks. In addition, Olney has been honored for her excellence in teaching by the University of Massachusetts, Amherst; the University of California, Berkeley; and by the Economic History Association. She is currently on leave from the University of California, Berkeley, where she teaches in the economics department.

Olney holds a bachelor’s degree in economics and mathematics from University of Redlands, and a master’s degree and doctorate in economics from the University of California, Berkeley.
