Statement From President Pestello on Supreme Court Affirmative Action Ruling

The June 24 Supreme Court ruling on affirmative action has drawn significant attention in the media and on college campuses across the country. The ruling on Fisher vs.University of Texas sent the case back to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, asking for further review. The 7-1 decision stated that schools must prove there are “no workable race-neutral alternatives” to achieve diversity on campus, placing an increased emphasis on the requirement that any consideration of race in college admissions must be “narrowly tailored,” and subject to “strict scrutiny.” The complete ruling can be found here.

Coverage about the ruling was widespread, including the Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Ed, and The New York Times.

While we do not yet understand the full implications of the Supreme Court decision on the Fisher case, Le Moyne College remains steadfastly committed to maintaining a diverse student body, as well as a diverse faculty and staff. We will continue to closely follow the analysis and implications of this ruling as it works its way through the legal system.

Sincerely,

Fred P. Pestello, Ph.D.
President
