On Thursday, Oct. 17, Le Moyne College held a ceremony to dedicate and bless the first floor of Mitchell Hall, which now houses the Madden School of Business at Le Moyne.
The new home for the Madden School was created following a complete renovation of the first floor of Mitchell Hall. The project, which also included the installation of new windows for the entire building, took placed over summer 2013 at the cost of approximately $5.3 million.
Among the features of this new academic space are a modern trading floor, a financial education center, a forensic accounting laboratory, and an applied research laboratory. The project was completed in time to welcome students as they returned to campus for the fall 2013 semester. The project represents the first phase of the transformation of Mitchell Hall; future phases will convert the second floor into additional academic space and faculty offices, and the third floor into a living-learning community for business students.
Among those making remarks at the ceremony were Mike Madden ’71, whose $7 million gift in 2012 created the first named school in Le Moyne’s history. The $7 million gift was the second largest donation in College history.
Also speaking were Le Moyne President Fred P. Pestello, Board of Trustee Chair Sharon (Kinsman) Salmon ’78, and David McCallum ’90, interim dean of the Madden School, and two current business students, Rebecca Wolf '14 and Greg Richards '14. A blessing was provided by John Bucki, S.J., the rector of Le Moyne’s Jesuit community.
Mitchell Hall opened in 1958 as the Loyola Hall Jesuit Residence and served in that capacity until 1990. Since that time it had served as administrative offices on the first floor, and student housing on the second and third floors.
The project was paid for through a combination of gifts to the College, borrowing through tax-exempt bonds, and a portion of the $2 million Regional Economic Development Grant the College received in 2012.
