Work by Le Moyne Faculty Contributes to City’s Designation as Pacesetter for Literacy

Thanks in part to the work of Le Moyne's Frank Ridzi, Sunita Singh and Monica Sylvia, and their involvement with the Literacy Coalition of Onondaga County, Syracuse is one of 38 communities in the nation recently designated as a 2013 Community Pacesetter for child literacy. Read a story from Syracuse.com on the recognition.

In 2011, research developed by the three Le Moyne professors and conducted in the field by students at the College evaluated the impact of the book distribution as part of the Imagination Library, a program founded by Dolly Parton, which provides books on a monthly basis to every enrolled child from birth to age 5.

Currently the program sends books to nearly 1,400 children in three city zip codes; that will grow to children in all city zip codes if funding can be secured. Nearly 45,000 books have been distributed in the city since 2010.

The research showed significant positive results for the program, including the fact that it has a positive effect on family reading regardless of child age, gender, family income, parental education, race, parental nation of birth and primary language.
