Le Moyne College Hosts Talk on Middle East Women's Rights

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (For Immediate Release) … Le Moyne College will host a talk by Amy Elouafi on Thursday, March 13, at 2:30 p.m. in the Reilley Room, located in Reilly Hall. The title of her talk is “Blue Jeans, Beaches and Barricades: Middle East Women’s Rights in a Global Context with Examples from Tunisia and Bahrain.”

Elouafi, an assistant professor of history at Syracuse University, will address the belief that gender relations in the Middle East can be understood uniquely through the lens of family law by questioning what women have gained from legislative changes. She will also look at the Middle East in a global context in which international aid organizations and world markets have as much influence on women’s lives as national governments.

Elouafi’s areas of expertise include social and cultural history of the Ottoman Empire and the modern Middle East; gender and colonialism; and family history.

This event is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the Rev. Kevin G. O’Connell, S.J., Professorship in the Humanities and the Center for Peace and Global Studies at Le Moyne College.

For more information, contact (315) 445-4497.
