For Second Consecutive Year, Le Moyne Achieves Record Enrollment Success

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (For Immediate Release) … Surpassing last year’s mark, Le Moyne College will once again welcome the largest class in its history for the upcoming fall semester, thanks to a hugely successful recruitment effort that saw a record level of applications and acceptances, resulting in an unprecedented number of deposits for first-year students at the Jesuit institution.

“Our enrollment success is a clear testament to the quality of our education and the overall experience for which Le Moyne is known,” said Dennis DePerro, Ed.D., vice president for enrollment management. “As our admission team meets with prospective students, it is clear that the College is benefiting from the tremendous momentum that surrounds Le Moyne.”

The numbers are impressive. As of May 11, the incoming first-year class as measured by deposits received was 649, easily eclipsing the goal of 600. Last year’s record class was 612; prior to that the College’s first-year classes had never surpassed 600 and were typically in the 550 to 575 range. This year, Le Moyne received a record 4,829 applications (more than 300 over the previous record), of which 64% were accepted.

“Le Moyne College has recently experienced growth, improvement and new levels of excellence on many fronts. Our enrollment numbers are a validation of these changes brought about by the energizing OneLeMoyne vision around which the campus is rallying,” said Le Moyne President Fred P. Pestello, Ph.D. “The increased interest in Le Moyne and the broad, values-based Jesuit education we deliver, as measured by our past two admission cycles, shows no sign of waning. It is through the work of everyone at Le Moyne – talented faculty and staff committed to educating the whole person – that we have enjoyed such significant success.”

Pestello cited several reasons for Le Moyne’s recent achievements, including:

• A transformative gift of $50 million in late 2008, from the estate of Robert and Catherine McDevitt, resulting in widespread publicity and enabling Le Moyne to record the largest endowment increase among all the nation’s private institutions for 2008-09.

• The largest construction initiative since the founding of the College, including: a 48,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art science building; the Le Moyne Plaza housing the campus bookstore, a café and pizzeria; the Dolphin Den, a centrally located state-of-the-art space to gather; and a multi-use turf field for four of the College’s NCAA teams.

• Marketing initiatives that include an integrated effort to expand into new markets across New York and neighboring states, and inclusion, for the first time, in the Princeton Review’s Best Northeastern Colleges: 2010 Edition.

• Academic recognition, including students receiving a Goldwater Scholarship, a Gilman Scholarship and classroom performance by Le Moyne’s student-athletes that has been significantly above average for graduation rate and overall GPA.

• Significant exposure for the College on several fronts, including athletic success on the playing field and courts, in particular softball, men’s soccer, men’s basketball and men’s lacrosse.

Le Moyne College is an independent, Jesuit institution offering a comprehensive program of liberal arts, sciences, pre-professional studies and graduate programs in education, business administration, nursing and physician assistant studies. Founded in 1946, Le Moyne’s 2,300 full-time undergraduates choose from 40 programs including majors in more than 30 areas of study, all of which emphasize the search for meaning and value in the intellectual life. Le Moyne is one of 28 Jesuit colleges and universities in the U.S., and the only Catholic college in Central New York.
