Washington Monthly Magazine Ranks Le Moyne Fifth Best Master’s Universities in Nation

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (For Immediate Release) … Le Moyne College is ranked fifth out of 551 in the Master’s Universities category in rankings released this week by Washington Monthly magazine. This is the first time the Master’s Universities category has been included in the magazine’s annual rankings, which have been published since 2005.

According to the publication, institutions in their rankings are rated  “…based on their contribution to the public good in three broad categories: Social Mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students), Research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and PhDs), and Service (encouraging students to give something back to their country).”

“It is impressive to see Le Moyne ranked in the top one percent of all Master’s level colleges. This is a further testimony to the hard work and dedication of our talented faculty and staff,” said President Fred P. Pestello, Ph.D. “The methodology used by the publication falls exactly in line with key elements of Le Moyne’s Jesuit mission. These cornerstones of a Le Moyne education, along with our recent record of placing students in the most prestigious doctoral universities in the nation, were important factors in how well we performed.”

Though the magazine’s rankings are relatively new, their methodology is being praised. An Aug. 24 article in The Chronicle of Higher Education by Richard Kahlenberg, senior fellow at the Century Foundation, states, “While other guides help students and parents decide how to spend their tuition dollars wisely, the Monthly says its goal is to tell citizens and policy makers which colleges [are] spending their tax dollars wisely. The Monthly ranks colleges and universities based on whether they promote social mobility; research, and service.”
