Le Moyne College Hosts Read-A-Thon to Benefit LEAP

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (For Immediate Release) … Le Moyne College will host a Read-A-Thon and Book Fair to benefit the Literacy Empowers All People (LEAP) Program on Saturday, May 14, from 9:30 a.m. – 8:30 p.m. at Barnes & Noble on Erie Boulevard in DeWitt.

Throughout the day, volunteers will be reading books aloud to children of all ages, encouraging excitement about books and reading while raising money for the LEAP program. LEAP is a joint program of Le Moyne College and All Souls Episcopal Church in New Orleans, La. Education students from Le Moyne provide academic support and mentoring, special programs focused on literacy skills and a summer literacy camp for children ages 3-16 in the Lower Ninth Ward whose lives and educations have been interrupted by Hurricane Katrina.

Highlights of the day include:

Norm Andrzejewski, founder of Operation Southern Comfort, will be reading “Green Eggs and Ham” at 11 a.m.

The two founders of the LEAP Program, Maggie Donohue (’12) and Becca Grey (’12) will be reading from Harry Potter, while dressed as Harry Potter and Ron Weasley at 7:45 p.m.

Local authors, Joe Albino ’59, Barb Roberts and Jennifer Fura will be reading during the day.

The event will close with a reading of “Goodnight, Moon” at 8:15 p.m.

In addition to the day’s events, people can vote ahead of time for their favorite children’s books and influence the reading list on Facebook.

People may make donations to support any of the individual readers or the program in general at the LEAP Web site.
