Here at Le Moyne we take pride in providing a safe campus environment for our community. I met with Derek McGork, Director of Campus Safety and Security, to discuss the services they provide to help make everyone feel safe and comfortable on campus.

Essential Tools for a Safe Campus

Campus security is the go to for students in case of emergencies. From medical emergencies, to fires, reporting a crime and more, campus security is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

The College is equipped with 11 emergency blue lights across campus. These are call boxes that connect students with a direct line to campus security with the touch of a button in case of an emergency. As soon as a student presses the button, campus security sends an officer directly to the box the call came from.

The Le Moyne SAFE app is an app that Campus Safety and Security specifically designed to help make their resources even more accessible for the campus community. The app provides emergencies numbers with a direct call button to both Campus Safety and 911 as well as the suicide and crisis lifeline. Additionally there are the numbers for Dewitt and Syracuse police for non urgent issues. The app is additionally equipped with a mobile blue light built right into the app. This was designed after students expressed concern about there being an instance where they may want to use the 11 blue lights on campus but feel unsafe remaining in the same place for an officer to arrive. The app allows students to continue moving, and gives campus security the ability to track the caller’s location so that an officer can locate exactly where to go. The app’s most used feature is Friends Walk, which allows users to temporarily share their location with anyone in their contacts so that they can track them as they walk home to make sure they reach their destination safely.

Safe Ride is a nighttime safety escort service available to all campus community members. Safe Ride operates from 6:00 p.m to 2:00 a.m and provides transportation to anyone who is walking across campus during the nighttime alone. A shuttle stops in ten different locations across campus where you can hop in and be brought to one of the other stops as opposed to walking across campus. A map of both the stops, along with a schedule of times the shuttle will be at each stop is available in the Le Moyne SAFE app. Students can also access a ride from the shuttle by simply calling campus security. Even outside the Safe Ride hours, if a student feels unsafe walking across campus, they can call security at any time and be provided with a safety escort.

Heights Alert is the College’s emergency notification system. Heights Alert provides the entire campus community with rapid communication in the event of a serious incident that poses a threat to the campus community. From severe weather, to crimes and more, Heights Alert will send a brief notification about the emergency with instructions on what to do. Students will receive notifications through email, text messages, push notifications through the Le Moyne SAFE app, social media networks, and cell phone calls if they register their phone numbers.

Campus Safety and Security is always striving to uphold a comfortable campus for all. If at any time a student has a concern or suggestion for Campus Security, they can simply report a tip through the Le Moyne SAFE app or report it to the security office at (315) 445-4444.
