Taking You Anywhere You Want to Go

Le Moyne honors students choose topics they want to research, work closely with a faculty mentor and have a say in their honors experience. Here are some examples.

Studying Joyce in Dublin

Honors student Kaelin Foody ’18 experienced James Joyce’s Dublin as a scholar participating in the University College Dublin’s James Joyce Summer School, thanks to the mentorship of Dr. Michael Davis. “I learned quickly that so much of Joyce’s writing is a sort of puzzle with endless depth. We would talk about Joyce’s works. He somehow convinced me to begin the intimidating task of reading Ulysses, and we met to discuss each chapter. His enthusiasm and support was enough to kindle in me an interest in Joyce, and eventually send me off to summer school.”

Orthodontist Dreams Turned to Finance

When honors student Declan Braun ’23 arrived on the Heights, he planned to become an orthodontist. However, he found himself drawn away from that field and toward the complexities of the financial markets. That was the start of what he calls “a three-year-long journey of learning, networking and strategic planning. The faculty have driven home this idea of ‘continual improvement’ in academics and life in general. I welcome constructive criticism, and I think this has allowed me to significantly improve the work that I do.”

Yes, all majors – including Undeclared – are eligible. And since virtually all Honors courses substitute your core requirements, you usually don’t have to take additional classes. Please note, though, that specific programs (e.g., nursing) do require advanced planning, so students should meet with the Honors Program Director to map out course progression early.

Thoughtful reflection, openness to new and different viewpoints and active participation in the discussion of ideas are expected of Honors students. Honors courses are challenging, but the intellectual journey is exciting, and the rewards are great.

Honors courses are taught by a select team of faculty from a range of disciplines. Professors draw upon their intellectual specializations when teaching Honors courses, modeling enthusiastic, engaged and ongoing scholarship.

There’s no specifically designated Honors housing. However, incoming residential students can request to live with another Honors student.

Yes – though you will need to plan your course of study, especially your senior year, very carefully with both the Honors Director and your faculty advisor in your second year. Planning is essential to accommodate all your required education courses and your Senior Honors Thesis.

You may withdraw from the Honors Program at any time by following appropriate procedures to ensure that you can graduate without having to complete the remaining Honors Program courses.
