To meet the growing nationwide demand for competent and compassionate mental health counselors, beginning with the fall 2023 semester students can enroll in a master’s program that is new to Le Moyne. The two-year Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (MSCMHC) program was originally offered at Cazenovia College and transitioned to Le Moyne when Cazenovia permanently closed its doors in June 2023.

The MSCMHC program features a 60-credit curriculum where students will explore values, perceptions, cultures, techniques and interventions for prevention and treatment of a broad range of mental health issues, and explore behaviors of clients from a variety of backgrounds and developmental stages.

“This is a perfect fit for Le Moyne’s mission of meeting an important need in today’s society in a way that respects the dignity of all individuals,” said Margaret Wells, Ph.D., dean of the Purcell School of Professional Studies. “In addition to a curriculum delivered in an inclusive learning environment, students will have a first-hand clinical experience that will prepare them to become competent and caring mental health counselors while also enhancing student appreciation of the human condition.”

She credited Associate Provost Mary Collins for her work with the New York State Education Department in coordinating a site visit and getting final approval for the program to be offered at Le Moyne.

With a small cohort of 15 students, the program is offered in a two-year, full-time format, with classes offered in late afternoon or early evening. The 60 credit hours are comprised of:

·       Professional Counseling Foundation Courses (24-credit hours)
·       Advanced Courses in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (12-credit hours)
·       Clinical Experience Requirements (15-credit hours)
·       Capstone Project (9-credit hours).

Upon completion of the program, students will be eligible for New York state licensure as clinical mental health counselors. Learn more about the program here. Those looking for additional information or with specific questions can email gradadmission@lemoyne.edu.

MSCMHC faculty are:
Associate Professor Christina Bobesky, Ph.D. (Department Chair and Program Director)
Associate Director Mary Handley, Ph.D., LMHC, CRC (Clinical Director for Internships and Practicums)
Professor of Practice Erica Randall, M.A., MSW, LCSW, LMFT

These Le Moyne faculty members were previously with Cazenovia College when the program was started there and will provide program continuity. The program’s move to Le Moyne is part of the College becoming a legacy institution for Cazenovia College.
