Beyond the Rhetoric of Welcoming the Stranger: Refugees and Resettlement During the Pandemic

The Community Hub invites you to join us for the SocialJustice in Syracuse lecture series, which features leaders from Syracuse who work to dismantle structural inequality and advance social justice in the community.

Kate Holmes, volunteer coordinator and program manager at Catholic Charities, will discuss how many"essential" workers during this past year of the pandemic were and continue to be refugees. Prior to 2019, their positions as grocery workers, janitors, housekeepers, food service staff, agricultural workers etc., were looked down on. They were invisible or dismissed. When the pandemic hit, they were thanked and appreciated. Slowly they are becoming invisible again. The prior administration worked at vilifying refugees and many were and continue to be targeted.

Welcoming the stranger is not just a biblical quote but our mission. Without refugees in Syracuse, we, as a city, would be in dire straits.
