New Professorships Will Add Diversity to Curriculum

Following Board approval, Le Moyne has created two endowed professorships in the College of Arts and Sciences. The new professorships - the 75th Anniversary Endowed Professor of Humanities and the Endowed Professorship for the Study of the Americas – are intended to increase diversity throughout all aspects of the Academic Affairs Division, including research, teaching and service.

“These new professorships demonstrate Le Moyne's deep and ongoing commitment to the humanities and inquiry into diverse cultures, literatures and societies,” said Interim Provost Jim Hannan. “We fully expect the world-class scholars who hold these professorships to possess energy and expertise that will benefit our students and the College as a whole. I am grateful to Le Moyne’s benefactors for their strong support of our faculty. Their generosity has made these professorships possible."

“The Board fully supports establishing these professorships, as well as other recent initiatives to increase diversity, equity and inclusion in Academic Affairs and throughout Le Moyne College,” said Trustee Chair Bob Reklaitis ’75.

The professorships may be awarded to current Le Moyne faculty or used to recruit faculty who will advance Le Moyne’s commitment to diversity. Currently, the Department of English is searching for a tenure-track assistant professor specializing in Black culture and literature, who will be awarded the 75th Anniversary Endowed Professor of Humanities for a three-year period. The Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures is searching for a tenure-track assistant professor specializing in Latin American or Caribbean studies. The successful candidate will receive the Endowed Professorship for the Study of the Americas for the first three years of their appointment.

Funding for the professorships came from the Always Forward campaign, which included Brilliant Mentors: Faculty Support as one of its pillars. Both professorships will provide a teaching load reduction, an annual salary supplement and a budget to support scholarly research and travel leading to publication.
