Students Travel to Capitol for Annual Lobby Day

A contingent of 11 Le Moyne students traveled to Albany in early February to take part in the New York State Aid Alliance Advocacy Day at the State Capitol Building. The day-long event brings students from independent sector colleges and universities from across the state to speak directly to legislators about the importance of student aid programs, and also see first-hand the political process in action. The College has participated in the event for nearly 20 years.

A highlight of the day was the introduction of the Le Moyne group by Assemblywoman Pam Hunter to the entire state assembly while they were in chambers. Shown in chambers are, from left, Assemblyman Al Stirpe, senior Kwasi Yeboah, Sophomore Derek Matina, senior Erin Simmons, Steve Kulick, director of government and foundation relations, and Assemblywoman Hunter. Eleven Le Moyne students, along with three high school students who are in the Liberty Partnership Program (LPP), took part in the day.

"Meeting with the legislators allowed us to express our own personal stories about how we benefit from receiving aid from the college and state," said Simmons. "We felt honored to represent our college and being recognized by our legislators was a great experience."

"I felt that our stories can really have an effect on how legislation happens," said Matina. "It was also gratifying to learn how important Le Moyne is to Assemblywomen Hunter!"

Among the programs the students advocated for while in Albany were the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP), the Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP), the Science, Technology and Mathematics Program (STEP) and its Collegiate counterpart C-STEP, and LPP. More than 1,200 Le Moyne students participate in TAP.
