Josefa Álvarez, Ph.D.

Josefa Álvarez received her bachelor’s degree in classical languages and literatures from the Complutense University of Madrid and her Ph.D. in Spanish from the University of Alcalá (Madrid). Her research interests center on contemporary Spanish poetry, Spanish women poets, and the classical tradition in Spanish literature. Professor Alvarez is the author and editor of several books, and her research focuses mainly on the poetry of Aurora Luque, the 2022 National Poetry Award in Spain. Included in her latest publications is the book No aceptaré más límites. Aurora Luque, gaviera y nómada. Ensayos reunidos (2023) and the edition of Aurora Luque’s collected poetry Las sirenas de abajo. Poesía reunida (1982-2022) (2023). She has also published articles and book chapters about other contemporary poets such as Chantal Maillard, Miriam Reyes, Ana Merino, Juan Antonio González Iglesias, or Francisco Díaz de Castro. In addition, she is interested in the methodology of Spanish as a second language and has published several articles and book chapters in this area, such as “Teaching the Poems of A rachas: Themes and Forms”, “Lorca y el flamenco: una propuestad didáctica.” and “¿Cómo educaría a una hija? Mujer y educación en España.” Prior to her appointment at Le Moyne, Josefa Álvarez was tenured professor at the Instituto Cervantes in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where she was training teachers and instructors of Spanish.
