Phil Novak earned a B.A. in English from the University of Colorado and an M.A. and Ph.D. in English from the University of Virginia. He teaches both literature and film and has published on both in Americana, PMLA, Criticism, and elsewhere. He is the author of Interpretation and Film Studies: Movie Made Meanings (Palgrave Macmillan, 2020); and he is currently working on a book about the films of Spike Lee and American history.
