Why a Film Degree From Le Moyne?

From the silent movies of the 1920s to the classics of Hollywood cinema, moving images are a window to the world. Films freeze time and tell stories about people and the societies in which we live. They entertain, connect us to different cultures, inspire us and raise questions about issues that affect humankind.

The film studies minor program at Le Moyne complements any undergraduate degree, including English. Through your studies, you’ll explore film history and gain a deeper understanding of visual texts. You’ll also have many opportunities to network, experiment and practice your craft. Join the Le Moyne Makes Movies club to create and produce professional-level films. Intern at the annual Syracuse International Film and Video Festival. At Le Moyne, you’ll develop the creative skills and techniques to tell the stories that are important to create magic.

The Art of Film Explored on the Heights

A film minor can be paired with most undergraduate degrees. You’ll analyze films and develop the intelligence and technical vocabulary to discuss films professionally.

The Film Minor

The film minor is housed within the English department and requires students to complete 15 credit hours. By paying attention to the relation of film to the humanities, arts and social sciences, film minors will pursue interdisciplinary inquiry that contributes to an understanding of the technological, narrative, documentary and experimental nature of film. Of the five required courses, the minor requires either the course History of Film: Beginnings to 1940 or Women, Film and Hollywood. The remaining four classes are up to you, and you can choose from an approved list of courses.

English Undergraduate Degrees

If you are interested in film, you might also consider the undergraduate degrees offered in the English department. You can pick from a literature or creative writing concentration or consider a dual major in communications or theatre.

Communications Undergraduate Degrees

Since a communication major prepares you for careers in the mass communication industries or graduate school, you might also be interested in a communications degree – or even a double or dual major, depending on your interests and goals.

Additional Relevant Minors

From professional writing to film to medieval studies, the English department offers additional minors to diversify your studies based on your interests. A visual design or a communications minor might also interest you.

English Graduate Degree

English Graduate Degree If you are considering becoming a teacher and looking to major in English, Le Moyne offers a couple of five-year pathway programs that will help you continue your studies to earn your undergraduate and graduate degrees within five years.

Studying Film at Le Moyne

Professor Grossman taught me that you can read films as you do literature. I never really thought about that before. The way that I watch films now has forever changed.”
