Experience Leading-Edge Research in a Biomedical Science Lab
Benefits of a D-SURF Award
The program offers an intensive ten-week biomedical science research experience during the summer between a student’s junior and senior years. Participants will work in a lab setting, attend research seminars, and engage in discussions about alternative careers in research as well as the process of applying to graduate school. The program also provides opportunities to interact directly with SUNY Upstate Medical University faculty members and graduate students. Participants receive a $6,200 stipend for the ten-week period, along with residential housing at SUNY Upstate Medical University.
How Do I Get a D-SURF Award?
The application deadline for the D-SURF Award is January 23. To be eligible, applicants must be juniors at Le Moyne College majoring in Chemistry, Biology, Physics, or Psychology, with a GPA of 3.7 or higher. Students must also have a strong interest in pursuing a Ph.D. and a demonstrated commitment to research. By January 23, applicants should submit the following materials to HPAC: a completed application with a personal statement, an official transcript, two letters of recommendation, and a recommendation to Upstate from Le Moyne College’s HPAC advisory board.
This summer I lived in Syracuse and worked full time in Dr. Huiayu Hu’s lab at Upstate Medical University researching a genetic blinding disease, retinitis pigmentosa. Retinitis Pigmentosa causes progressive degeneration of photoreceptors resulting in total vision loss, this disease affects 1 in 3000 to 7000 people worldwide. I created scientific figures, wrote an article and presented my findings. Along with my main project I also helped assist and other projects in the lab as well, giving me a lot of new experience with equipment I wouldn’t have been able to work with at Le Moyne.”
