Curious Critter Corners: A Multi-Dimensional Community Solution

This summer, Stephanie and Isaac Budmen led the Innovation Internship program at the Keenan Center in partnership with ERIE21. Together, they guided 50 Syracuse Central School District high school students in creating interactive exhibits called Curious Critter Corners at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo. These engaging installations address common visitor questions, such as “Where are the animals?” “What is American Zoological Association accreditation and why does it matter?” and “Are zoos only for children and entertainment?”
During the two-week program, students lived on campus and dedicated four hours each day to the project under the Budmens’ mentorship. Starting with initial concepts and content planning, students collaborated closely with zoo staff, receiving feedback to refine their designs. Once approved, they had five days to build and install the exhibits, experiencing firsthand the challenges of real-world deadlines, client expectations, and quality standards.
Beyond enhancing the visitor experience for thousands annually, this project offered meaningful hands-on opportunities in design, project management, and problem-solving. The internship reflects the Keenan Center’s focus on authentic learning and community engagement, highlighting how inquiry-based education positively impacts both students and their communities.
