Do’s and Don’ts of College: First Year Edition
Graduating from high school and starting college is a big step! You’re excited to enter the world of freedom while also learn more about yourself. At Le Moyne, you will be immersed in a new environment full of new people, classes, and endless opportunities. We stress the importance of cura personalis on campus, which refers to mental, bodily, and spiritual care. Here is a list of Do’s and Don’ts to help you succeed as a first year student.
DO: Make good use of your time.
Managing your time effectively can be a challenge. It can be difficult to balance upcoming assignments, deadlines, studying, spending time with friends, and participating in extracurricular activities. Even though you have more freedom, it is critical to plan your time wisely because you can easily fall behind in your studies and even create space for procrastination. Find out what works best for you in terms of time management to help ease your transition. Whether you use a physical or digital planner, breaking down the tasks you need to complete each day into manageable chunks will help you have a successful year!
DONT: Overschedule yourself.
As a college student, you will realize that your time is valuable. Try not to get so distracted by other things that you neglect your studies. And remember that overscheduling can be exhausting and difficult to keep up. No one is going to tell you what to do or how to schedule your time, so make the best choices you can.
DO: Make use of campus resources.
We have a plethora of resources at Le Moyne that can help you succeed throughout your first year. From an academic standpoint, the QRC (Quantitative Reasoning Center) is available to assist you by providing tutoring for classes in which you may be struggling. Furthermore, our Office of Career Advising and Development is brimming with incredible staff and resources to assist you throughout your career path, from improving your resume to finding internships and career opportunities! Furthermore, the Wellness Center offers counseling and support groups to help you de-stress! You are never alone — reach out if you need help, Le Moyne is here for you!
DONT: Isolate yourself!
As students, we frequently allow our studies to consume us. But college should also be about branching out and meeting new people. You can join a variety of student organizations on campus; or participate in a variety of fun activities hosted by the LSPB (Le Moyne Student Planning Board) such as BINGO, Trivia Night, and occasionally planned field trips. Take advantage of all of the FUN opportunities available on campus; they are designed to help you ENJOY and DESTRESS!
The first year of college is a time of transition. Keep these pointers in mind, and you’ll have an easier time.
