From High School to College: How Core 100 Prepares You for Success

The transition from high school to college is a big step, but our Core 100 seminar is designed to help you navigate it with confidence. Your first-year seminar is more than just another class—it’s your introduction to college life, critical thinking, and academic success.
Core 100 at Le Moyne: Your Key to a Strong Start
Core 100 is a required seminar for all first-year students. It focuses on developing essential skills like critical thinking, academic writing, and discussion-based learning. Each section of Core 100 has a unique theme, allowing you to choose a topic that interests you. Past topics have ranged from environmental issues to social justice to the intersection of science and philosophy.
Unlike your high school courses, Core 100 encourages discussion-based learning rather than just memorization. You’ll engage with classmates in meaningful conversations, analyze complex issues, and develop your own perspectives on important topics.
You’ll also complete a common reading assignment—a book or set of works that all first-year students read and discuss in their seminars. Previous reading assignments have included Hiroshima by John Hersey and Sonny’s Blues by James Baldwin. These readings will be woven into your coursework and serve as a foundation for discussions on ethics, social responsibility, and global perspectives.
Core 100 is designed to introduce you to the Jesuit values that shape a Le Moyne education, including:
- Critical Thinking: Learning to analyze issues from multiple perspectives
- Diversity of Thought: Engaging with classmates from different backgrounds and viewpoints
- Oral & Written Communication: Developing strong discussion and writing skills
- Academic Integrity: Understanding proper research practices and avoiding plagiarism
The skills developed in Core 100 will be helpful throughout your college journey. You’ll become a stronger writer, a more confident speaker, and a critical thinker—skills that will help you in any major or career. Plus, by the time your second semester rolls around, you’ll already be familiar with the expectations of college coursework.
Core 100 is more than just a class—it’s a stepping stone to a successful college experience. It’s where you’ll develop essential skills, meet new friends, and start thinking like a college student. Get ready to dive in, ask questions, and explore new ideas.

My time on The Heights helped me become a sharper critical thinker, which is critical in a field like science that calls for precision, repetition and a healthy level of skepticism. The Core inspired me to become a lifelong learner, the someone who is constantly curious and committed to asking questions”
