Stories from Space: An Evening with Dr. Jeanette Epps ’92

Astronaut Dr. Jeanette Epps ’92 returned to Le Moyne for Stories from Space, sharing her journey from the classrooms of the Heights to nearly eight months aboard the International Space Station. Her visit was part of the Carroll College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Alumni Lecture
“It was a 15-year dream, with lots of ups and downs, and to finally get there I was just mesmerized,” Dr. Epps reflected.
An Evening of Exploration and Inspiration
In conversation with Sharon Kinsman Salmon ’78, Epps spoke about perseverance, teamwork, and the wonder of exploration.

“What struck me the most was Jeanette’s intentionality to connect with our students on a human level. She somehow made going to space seem possible, noting that we need more people traveling to space so that we can continue to learn about the impact of space on humans.” Travis Newton, Ph.D., Interim Dean of the Carroll College of Arts & Sciences

“We were suspended in belief initially, and then all of a sudden, we erupted like kids on a roller coaster as we started being propelled into space.”

“There are so many things that could have gone wrong, but having Le Moyne on my side and being able to have open discussions really helped my understand that I was on the right track. That made all the difference and I am here now because of that.”

“It teaches you that if you can’t get along with people and you’re not flexible and adaptable, you really won’t go far.” (On her training and the mission)

“You really get to know yourself, what self-care means, but also you learn what team-care means. And that’s great.”

“Le Moyne was critical in building all of those fine soft skills you really do need once you’re out in the world (even when you’re a science major!). All of these classes just build your character and who you are, and they help you add a different layer to your story.” (Epps’ thoughts on the value of the liberal arts at Le Moyne)
"When you look at the Earth from space, you realize we’ve got to do better. The compassion I felt for humanity, for each other, it just overwhelmed me. We are so careless with each other on Earth. In space, in the vastness and the quiet, you feel alone, but there’s a voice. And you hear it, every so often."
