A message from President Fred Pestello on Hurricane Sandy

As we witnessed the devastating impact of Hurricane Sandy as it made landfall yesterday, Le Moyne College prepared for the potentially destructive weather brought by this historic storm. The College cancelled classes starting at 3:30 p.m. yesterday and all day today, as forecasters predicted that the Central New York region would be hit by winds gusting to 60 miles-per-hour and up to two inches of rain.

Ultimately, the region was largely spared, as the remnants of Hurricane Sandy headed west into Pennsylvania and Ohio. While we are thankful that we were not touched by the hurricane’s destructive forces, the thoughts and prayers of everyone here at Le Moyne are with the millions of individuals who were impacted, many facing the daunting challenge of rebuilding and restoring communities, infrastructures, and homes. We pray for the family and friends of those whose lives were lost in the storm.

We also pray for our many alumni and the families of students living along the coast and in other regions that experienced the brunt of the weather. Last night and into today, the staff of Le Moyne’s Student Development division is working with hundreds of students from the affected areas who were anxiously waiting to hear from family members who were evacuated. Our Jesuit community is available to provide pastoral care for students and members of the Le Moyne community.

Please join me in praying for all those impacted, that they may find peace and comfort and quickly recover from this devastating event.

Fred Pestello, Ph.D.
