The Venerable Tenzin Priyadarshi to Deliver The Rev. Daniel Berrigan, S.J., Peacemaker Lecture at Le Moyne College

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (For Immediate Release) … The Venerable Tenzin Priyadarshi will deliver The Rev. Daniel Berrigan, S.J., Peacemaker Lecture at Le Moyne College on Tuesday, April 9, at 7 p.m. in the Panasci Family Chapel.

Given how religious practice and political violence seem to be so often linked in the modern period, Venerable Tenzin will reflect in his talk on religious resources for peace building in today's world. As a Le Moyne College graduate, he will speak both to his own faith journey and the importance of mobilizing religious traditions in a globalized and religious plural world.

The Venerable Tenzin Priyadarshi is the founding director of the Dalai Lama Center for Ethics and Transformative Values at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). At the age of 10, he entered a Buddhist monastery in Rajgir near the ancient Nalanda University and was subsequently ordained by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who is his spiritual mentor.

Venerable Tenzin earned a bachelor’s degree from Le Moyne College in 2001, where he was an Integral Honors scholar studying philosophy, physics and religious studies with minors in peace and global studies and Japanese. He completed his graduate studies in comparative philosophy of religion at Harvard University and was appointed as the first Buddhist chaplain at MIT. He has been active in conflict resolution processes in India and Sri Lanka.

Following the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004, Venerable Tenzin founded the Prajnopaya Foundation to develop innovative and sustainable ways to alleviate suffering in developing countries. He was project advisor to a team of architects from MIT, Harvard University Graduate School of Design, and Cambridge University to develop the Tsunami Safe(r) Houses, low-cost high resistant homes, for families in Sri Lanka. The foundation has been active in health care endeavors in India, including systematic methods to curtail tuberculosis and bring health care to rural areas. In December 2009, Venerable Tenzin was felicitated as "Icon of Bihar" at the Bihar Conclave. He is the youngest person to receive this honor.

His talk is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the Center for Peace and Global Studies and the Office of Mission and Identity through the support of the International House endowment at Le Moyne. For more information, call (315) 445-4294.

Le Moyne's International House established The Rev. Daniel Berrigan, S.J./International House Peacemaker Lecture Endowment in 2000. This fund was created to honor International House's founder and one of the great Catholic social activists of the 20th century. Each year the College invites a prominent peacemaker, like Daniel Berrigan, to deliver this lecture, helping to keep important justice issues in the forefront of the entire Le Moyne community and to serve as a catalyst for reflection and action.
