SYRACUSE, N.Y. (For Immediate Release) … Journalist and author Laila Al-Arian will visit Le Moyne College to discuss her book "Collateral Damage: America's War Against Iraqi Civilians," on Thursday, April 22, at 4 p.m. in the Reilley Room, located in Reilly Hall.posted on: 4/19/2010
“Collateral Damage,” co-authored with journalist and writer Chris Hedges, brings together testimony from the largest number of on the record, named, combat veterans who reveal the disturbing, daily reality of war and occupation in Iraq. Through their eyes, we learn how the mechanics of war lead to the abuse and frequent killing of innocents. They describe convoys of vehicles roaring down roads, smashing into cars, and hitting Iraqi civilians. They detail raids that leave families shot dead in the mayhem. And they describe a battlefield in which troops, untrained to distinguish between combatants and civilians, are authorized to shoot whenever they feel threatened. The book is based on their 2007 Nation magazine investigative piece, "The Other War," which was selected as one of Project Censored's 25 most important undercovered news stories of 2008.
Laila Al-Arian is a writer and producer for Al Jazeera English in Washington, D.C. She received a master’s degree from Columbia's Graduate School of Journalism.
