Bachelor of Science Program in Nursing

The 64-65 credit RN-BS in nursing education program is nationally accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).  This upper division BS degree program is designed for registered nurses interested in pursuing a higher level of education for professional nursing practice. Graduates of associate degree or diploma programs in nursing are eligible upon admission to transfer in 60 credits of prerequisite course work from their basic nursing education program to pursue a Bachelor of Science on a full-time or part-time basis. The pre-admission requirements have been determined to allow most prospective students a seamless transition to the upper division program.

The nursing education program at Le Moyne is an ideal fit with the College’s mission of preparing students for leadership and service to society. The centerpiece of this curriculum, which includes a combination of primarily classroom study and a couple of selected practicum experiences, is designed for the education and development of the professional nurse. Simultaneously, this curriculum consists of a comprehensive set of core liberal arts and science courses, which are required of all students regardless of major and serve as the underpinnings for the education of the whole person. This unique program of study in nursing is truly a “thinking” curriculum that affords students the necessary perspectives and skills to form their beliefs, value systems, and commitments to positions of leadership and service in their personal and professional lives.

Dual Degree Partnership in Nursing

(1+2+1 Partnership) Le Moyne College and St. Joseph’s College of Nursing

The Dual Degree Partnership in Nursing (DDPN) represents a unique articulation agreement between Le Moyne College’s Nursing Program and St. Joseph’s College of Nursing at St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center.  This DDPN requires two years of full-time study at Le Moyne College (years 1 and 4) and two years of full-time study at St. Joseph's College of Nursing (years 2 and 3) to satisfy both the associate degree and bachelor degree requirements.

The program objectives of this articulation model are to:
# Encourage a younger cohort of students to major in nursing.
# Provide an innovative approach that contributes to the recruitment and retention of applicants pursuing nursing education.
# Promote the smooth transition of qualified applicants between Le Moyne College and St. Joseph's College of Nursing.
# Provide students with a dynamic four-year living and learning campus environment at Le Moyne that enhances their personal and educational development.
# Offer educational mobility leading to the Bachelor of Science.

High school seniors are required to apply simultaneously to both Le Moyne College and St. Joseph’s College of Nursing. Students already enrolled in their first year of study at Le Moyne College may be considered for acceptance to the DDPN on an individual basis. Agreement on the number of students accepted each year into the DDPN will be at the discretion of the two institutions.

The decision to admit students considered qualified for the DDPN will be determined by the appropriate admissions committee of each college. Students will be admitted to Le Moyne College for the 1st year of study as undeclared majors and will declare their major as Nursing at the completion of the third year of study at St. Joseph’s College of Nursing and prior to beginning their 4th year of study at Le Moyne. Students are expected to live on the Le Moyne campus during the entire four years of study. Applicants to the DDPN must meet all of the conditions of eligibility as required by both colleges.

To qualify for admission and progression in the program, the student must:

•  Meet the academic, health, technical standards, and financial requirements of both institutions
•  Maintain full-time status while enrolled in the 1st and 4th years at Le Moyne College and the 2nd and 3rd years at St. Joseph’s College of Nursing.
•  Successfully complete all first-year courses at Le Moyne College prior to beginning the second year of study at St. Joseph's College of Nursing
•  Achieve a minimum grade point average of 2.0 throughout the four years of study
•  Earn a grade of C or above in the nursing courses and in the liberal arts and science courses required in the nursing major at both institutions

To meet the graduation requirements for the Associate Degree in Applied Science (AAS) from St. Joseph's College of Nursing, the student must satisfy the required course work as designed in the DDPN curriculum plan.

Upon successful completion of the St. Joseph’s Associate Degree nursing program, the student will have earned an AAS degree with a major in nursing and is expected to successfully challenge the National Council Licensing Examination (NCLEX) for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in the summer between the 3rd and 4th years of study.

Progression into the fourth year of full–time study at Le Moyne College requires the student to have successfully completed the St. Joseph’s program of study and show evidence of RN licensure. To meet the graduation requirements for the Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Nursing from Le Moyne College, the student must satisfy the required course work as designed in the DDPN curriculum plan.

Academic Criteria for RN-BS Students

   1. A grade of C or better must be earned in each nursing course and in courses supporting the nursing major to progress in the program of study. Only two courses can be repeated and a course can be repeated only once.

   2. Nursing courses from previous college course work taken more than 10 years prior to the date of matriculation may be considered for transfer credit to meet BS degree program requirements only with the approval of the course instructor and program chair.

   3. Successful completion of the clinical component of courses carrying clinical hour requirements must be achieved to successfully pass the course.

   4. A student not yet licensed as an RN but eligible for NYS registered nurse licensure may be conditionally accepted into the BS degree program, pending successful completion of the State Board exam (NCLEX) no later than the end of the first semester of matriculation. If the student is not successful at passing the licensing exam by that time, s/he must take a leave of absence from the program until RN licensure is granted.

   5. Every student must be in compliance with the health requirements of Le Moyne College and of each institution and agency in which they practice for the purpose of fulfilling the clinical component of their course work.

   6. Every student is expected to display professional behavior in the classroom, laboratory, clinical, and service learning setting according to the accepted nursing standards and codes of conduct.

   7. Each student must be able to meet the basic Technical Standards of performance necessary for the practice of nursing for admission and progression in the program of study.

A $25,000 Promise of Nursing for New York Nursing School Grant, administered by the Foundation of the National Student Nurses' Association, was received to support the development of the new DDPN initiative. Funding for the grant program was contributed by several hospitals and health care agencies in the New York area, by Johnson & Johnson, and by national companies with an interest in supporting nursing education. The funds were raised at a gala fundraising event sponsored by Johnson & Johnson.
