Natural Wonders and the Sources of Awe

A solar eclipse is a natural event, the result of a precise alignment of the sun and moon as seen from our position on Earth. The result, day seemingly transformed into night for a few minutes, is unrivaled as a source of wonder.

Peter Saulson, Ph.D., will review the astronomy of eclipses, and their capacity to evoke awe and raise religious questions. Dr. Saulson is professor of physics emeritus at Syracuse University (SU) and a research affiliate at the MIT Kavli Institute. Since retiring from SU in late 2019, he has explored the connection between traditional religious understanding and modern scientific pictures of the universe.

This event is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the Office of the President.
